Specie characteristics

The Bulgarian Seal Point Angelfish is a striking and relatively new variety of freshwater angelfish, scientifically known as Pterophyllum scalare.

🐟 Appearance

  • Coloration: It features a silvery or platinum body with dark "seal point" markings around the edges of the fins and body, similar to the coloration of seal point Siamese cats.
  • Fins: Long, flowing dorsal and ventral fins give it a graceful, elegant appearance.
  • Size: Adults typically reach 6–8 inches in height, including fin extensions.

🌍 Origin

  • This is a hybrid variety developed through selective breeding in the aquarium trade, not found in the wild.

🧬 Genetics

  • It is derived from Black Angelfish, but a unique gene suppresses the black pigmentation on the body, leaving a platinum sheen with contrasting dark fins.

🧠 Temperament

  • Generally peaceful, though they can become territorial during breeding.
  • Suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish.

🏡 Tank Requirements

  • Minimum tank size: 30 gallons for one; 55+ gallons for a pair or group.
  • Water temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Water hardness: 3–8 dGH (soft to moderately hard)

🍽️ Diet

  • Omnivorous: Enjoys a mix of high-quality flakes or pellets, live/frozen foods (like brine shrimp and bloodworms), and plant matter (like spirulina or blanched spinach).

🌿 Tank Setup

  • Prefers well-planted tanks with floating plantsdriftwood, and hiding spots.
  • Requires moderate to strong filtration but avoid strong currents.
